Traditionally, a bungalow is defined as a single-family dwelling unit with ground and first floor. But with changes in bye-laws over time, additional floors can be added to accommodate more families and facilities.
Nearly 150-200 bungalows are being broken down in South Delhi every year to built luxurious flats in their place. In pursuit of more space and better finances, people living in these posh localities find it more practical to do away with their family homes in collaboration with builders.
The size of the families is increasing and often it is not possible to buy another house in the same area. So people collaborate with builders who make flats and also give them money. It is also about upgrading the lifestyle for people who are living in old school bungalows.
Though the concept of builder floors has been there for two decades now, it has caught on as a trend in couple of years only. Huge houses in Vasant Vihar, Jor Bagh, Defence Colony, Sunder Nagar, Panchsheel Park, SDA and Haus Khas Enclave have many such boutique residences with classy facade and five-star facilities.
